News / Fetlar garden
TWO volunteers with the bird charity RSPB have spent a month on the Shetland isle of Fetlar completing a community garden at the local interpretive centre.
John Kenyon and Julie Redrup from Bedfordshire used shells, pebbles, driftwood, old pottery and recycled fishnet in their design, and recruited local folk, holiday makers and even the breakwater contractors FL Johnston Ltd in their scheme.
Shetland north isles RSPB warden Martha Smith said she hoped the community garden would be the first of many on the small island, which is often called the “Garden of Shetland”.
“Ultimately the aim is for a long-term community project. It is being led by RSPB Scotland to help get it off the ground,” she said.
“We’ll be looking at ways to benefit wildlife in these areas including simple things like building nest boxes and planting shrubs and flowers to attract birds, moths and butterflies.”
The project has been offered a small £250 grant from VSC Action Earth to help pay for plants and new tools and equipment so that the project may continue into the future.
