News / School celebrates big birthday
LERWICK’s Anderson High school is celebrating its 150th birthday with a number of events over a two week period starting at the end of the month.
The celebrations start with a gala concert in the newly opened Mareel on 29 September featuring several local musicians and groups, many of whom are former pupils.
The following weekend the school will open its doors to the public, when there will be displays highlighting key events over the life of the school, class and hostel photos, memories of former pupils and teachers, and exhibits of current pupils’ work.
Also available will be a special anniversary edition of the school’s newsletter. Teas and home bakes will be served throughout the weekend and a car boot sale will be held on the Sunday afternoon.
Anyone wishing to be involved by contributing memories, photos, artefacts or anecdotes of their time at the school as pupils or staff are asked to contact the following teachers at the school soon by telephone on 01595 808008 or by email:

The Anderson Educational Institute opened its doors on 4 August 1862. The school was the gift of former P&O chairman Arthur Anderson, whose aims were to increase the limited provision of elementary education for poor children and to provide higher education for children whose parents could afford to pay fees.
