News / Court round up
A SHETLAND teenager has been told to start saving up to pay for a £2,500 shop window he smashed in Lerwick’s town centre.
Joseph John Irvine, of 29 Hoofields, Lerwick, pled guilty to a charge of reckless conduct when he appeared before the town’s sheriff court on Wednesday morning.
The court heard how a group of people were messing about with a traffic cone in Commercial Street at around 3am on Sunday 3 June.
When Irvine threw the cone at another in the group, he missed his target and smashed a window belonging to Ninians shop.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the 16 year old had made no effort to pay any compensation.
His defence lawyer Tommy Allan told the court his client could not afford to pay for the damage.
Sheriff Philip Mann deferred sentence until March next year for Irvine to start saving up some money and to be of good behaviour.
Meanwhile 26 year old Scott Henry, of 21 Arheim, Lerwick was fined £300 after pleading guilty to repeatedly punching another man on the head to his injury when he became involved in a fight at Harrison Square on 14 May.
Also fined £300 was Wayne Hunter, aged 24, of 32c Ladies Drive, Lerwick, for behaving in a threatening manner, as well as challenging and struggling with police officers in Commercial Street, on 18 August.
