News / MSP questions fire cuts
SHETLAND MSP Tavish Scott has voiced his concern about the closure of fire station on the remote isles of Foula and Out Skerries, saying there remain unanswered questions.
Highland Islands Fire Board voted last week to close the two stations saying they were unable to meet modern fire fighting and safety standards.
On Tuesday Mr Scott said he had spoken to local fire fighters and both islands believed they had the numbers to keep a service going, but just lacked the training.
“Both Foula and Skerries feel as though the goalposts kept shifting on training needs and number of officers,” Mr Scott said.
“Aside from now depending on helicopters bringing in fire fighters from other locations there are still questions which need to be asked about fire cover for flights and the possible impact on services.
“I have written to the Deputy Chief Fire Officer to clarify a variety of points but I feel there is little that will allay the worries of the local communities who will be now left with little more than smoke alarms and fire extinguishers to protect their families and property.”
