News / Scottish Water apologises for brown water
SCOTTISH Water has apologised to customers in a small Shetland village after their tap water suddenly turned from clear to brown.
Householders in Vidlin first alerted the utility late on Monday night that their water supply was not up to the usual standard.
When they phoned Scottish Water’s emergency line they were told to let the taps run to allow the discolouring to clear.
Engineers were out on Tuesday to assure customers that the brown colour was not harmful.
A spokeswoman said: “The discolouration is likely to have been caused by the disturbance of natural sediment that builds up in pipes over time.
“This sediment is harmless and the discoloured appearance means customers are unlikely to drink the water. We appreciate the inconvenience this will cause and are working hard to restore normal service by flushing out the mains.
“Once the flushing out is complete we will contact them to ensure the issue has been resolved.”
