News / Mareel – the waiting continues

THE waiting for a confirmed opening date for Shetland’s new music and cinema venue Mareel continues into this week.

It is still uncertain whether or not Tuesday night’s concert of American singer/songwriter Devon Sproule can go ahead in the Mareel.

Promoter, local journalist Neil Riddell, is meanwhile considering moving the concert to the Garrison Theatre.

“I’d like to apologise to those who have bought tickets for the uncertainty over the venue. It is a very frustrating situation for all concerned, but one way or another the concert will go ahead and it should be an excellent night of music,” Riddell said at the weekend.

Shetland Arts spokeswoman Lisa Ward said on Friday that everybody at the arts agency was frustrated with the delays but equally excited that the opening of the long awaited £12 million arts venue was imminent.

She said that a “few snagging items” continued to prevent the agency from receiving the certification needed to open the venue to the public.

“We are assessing the situation day by day, and Tuesday will be the first we know,” she said.

Meanwhile, local film production company Maddrim Media has produced a set of short videos introducing the new music and cinema venue. The first of the series can be viewed as part of this article – more to follow.

Shetland Arts has also published a new set of stunning Mareel photos taken by local photographer Mark Sinclair of Phatsheep Photography.

Shetland News is here publishing a selection of Sinclair’s photos – more can soon be viewed on Shetland Arts’ own website at www.shetlandarts.org and via the organisation’s social media.
