News / Dementia DVD launched
A NEW DVD aimed at helping people with dementia and their carers has been launched in the Shetland Museum and Archives, on Wednesday.
Living Well with Dementia is a joint production of NHS Health Scotland, alongside Alzheimer Scotland and the Scottish Dementia Working Group.
Dementia is a branch term for any disease which attacks brain cells, causes vitamin deficiencies or starves the brain cells of blood. Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia are the two most common types.
Shetland Islands Council’s director of community care Sally Shaw said: “I am sure that the DVD will become a valuable resource adding to and enhancing the other post-diagnostic materials that are available for people in Shetland.”
Around 180 people have been diagnosed with dementia in Shetland, though more people are expected to suffer from the condition.
With the population of Scotland ageing, dementia cases are predicted to double in a generation, which is why the parties involved believe raising awareness now is crucial.
