Letters / Correction
I just read your story about salmon deaths (http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/4561-holyrood-denies-greenwash-over-salmon-deaths.html) and comments by Mr Don Staniford and need to offer a few corrections to the following paragraph.
“The English-born activist was recently deported from Canada for overstaying his visa after he was taken to court twice by Norwegian salmon firms accusing him of defamation. He won one case on appeal, the other outcome of the other is still pending.”
While the facts about Staniford’s deportation are true, he was not taken to court twice by “Norwegian salmon firms.” He was taken to court in 2005 by Creative Salmon, a Canadian-owned company. In 2007, the court ruled in Creative Salmon’s favour and found Staniford guilty of defamation. Staniford appealed and the appeal court found that because of a technicality, Staniford was eligible for a new trial. He never “won one case on appeal.” Creative Salmon simply decided not to take him to court again for a new trial.
The outcome of our suit against him is still pending, as you report.
As for us, we are incorporated in Canada, managed by Canadians and employing Canadians. Our parent company is Cermaq ASA in Norway but this is not our defining criteria any more than any other company with a foreign head office.
