News / Change at terminal monitoring

Professor David Paterson.

MARINE biologist Professor David Paterson, from St Andrews University, has been named as the new head of the Shetland Oil Terminal Environmental Advisory Group’s (SOTEAG) monitoring committee.

Professor Paterson is the executive director of MASTS – the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology Scotland – a partnership of about 700 marine researchers from across Scotland.

He takes over from Professor Ian Boyd who has been appointed chief scientific advisor to the UK’s Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

SOTEAG was formed in 1977 to examine and advise on the environmental implications of operating an oil terminal at Sullom Voe.

Paying tribute to Professor Boyd’s two and a half years at the helm of the group’s monitoring committee, SOTEAG chairman Dr Mike Richardson said: “Ian Boyd has contributed a great deal to SOTEAG’s ongoing success over the past few years.”
