TWENTY community groups in Shetland have benefitted from more than £130,000 in grants to help reduce energy costs in local halls, youth centres and boating clubs.
Shetland Islands Council said on Thursday that more money was available through its Community Energy Efficiency Programme.
Ness Boating Club was given £28,519 for the installation of new windows, energy saving lights, insulation and a wind break for the main door.
Club secretary Theresa Wadley said: “They also make the building more comfortable and attractive, which in turn means we’ve seen an increase in usage. At the end of the day, we’ve got lower bills and increased income – a good result.”
The halls in Aith, Brae, Trondra and Mid Yell as well as Whalsay Golf Club, the Sandveien Neighbourhood Centre and the Walls Swimming Pool have also received grants.
SIC grants co-ordinator Michael Duncan said anybody interested in the scheme should contact him or their local community work office.
