Letters / Independence – a must have thing

I am at a loss as to why folk who live in Shetland have such an issue with the prospects of Scottish independence.

Being shackled to the Home Counties ruling mob at Westminster has never been any good for Scotland, let alone Shetland.

Scottish interests in the corrupt and unaffordable EU are left to the Nasty Party, their political prostitute Lib Con allies and a New Labour who became the Tories with a small “t” when the untried war criminal Tony (rich guy) Blair took over.

There are two main reasons Scottish independence is a must have thing.

Firstly to have a say at where the real centre of government lies in this corruption of the meaning of democracy in Brussels (where sprouts come from and go to) so to have a say at the top table, influence debate, have the right to veto silly rules or simply say “No” you have to have a seat at the round table.

Scotland has no such seat and with Westminster treating Scotland like a milk cow and subservient to the criminally inept and morally redundant parliament of England – we can do better by being a member in our own right.

Secondly the claim that Shetland would suffer worse under the SNP or whoever ruled Scotland is not a valid reason for not having Scottish independence, as the very nature of the journey from English domination to Scottish home rule opens up the door to more autonomy for islands or areas in Scotland as the arguments would be the same.

It’s so simple really: asking for more autonomy or home rule from a government who wants more autonomy or home rule means you are speaking to someone with the same philosophy – so very different to the greedy lunatics in Westminster.

Alex Salmond is one of the best politicians for generations and regularly shows how rubbish the opposition is just now, but I accept he isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

That said Scottish independence is far more important than Alex Salmond or even the SNP though we need them at the moment.

I would love to see a Scottish Labour Party that reflected a better social conscience and reached out to the ordinary folk or any other party that put Scotland before some minority group such as the Nasty Party that are getting the poor to pay so the rich can maintain their disposable income; the Liberals who might return to putting folk before their crazy need to be in power and the Tories to just go away as no country does well for long based on grace and favour, personal greed nepotism.

Even in Shetland we cannot be any worse off but we could get more control over our own affairs and that gets my vote, despite the local democracy here needing an away day to relearn what democracy is really about.
