News / Big Bannock sells out
SHETLAND’S biggest celebration of nonsense, the Big Bannock, confirmed itself as one of the islands’ most popular events when tickets sold out within 45 minutes of going on sale on Sunday.
All 650 £5 tickets flew out of North Roe hall faster than hotcakes with the organisers promising to send extras to those who queued but came a little too late.
The event that raises thousands every year for Cancer Research and local charities has been taking place every year since the millennium, but this is the first year tickets have been sold to keep up with the modern world of rules and regulations.
It is also an attempt to keep some control of events after the hall toilets were vandalised last year.
Bannock day itself arrives on 18 August with all the old favourites, including the Merry Tiller Race, though sources say there could be an Olympic slant on this year’s challenge over the kirning of the milk which is traditionally a battle between the Northmavine and Delting jarl squads.
Music, as ever, will come from the ever popular Vatersay Boys, who are planning an extended tour of the isles this year taking in Whalsay, Yell and Aith before the big day itself.
