Letters / Pointing out the spin
In reply to Carole Radford (Should have had a referendum; SN 15/5/12) the stated percentage is the amount of sustainable members as of 1 May, unless Sustainable Shetland aren’t sure about how many members they have then am pretty sure its accurate.
The point I am trying to make is Sustainable Shetland currently only have 826 members which equals 3.755 percent of Shetlands population…..if they all live in Shetland.
By no means does this give them any sort of a mandate to claim they have the backing of the Shetland Islands. I was simple pointing out the spin they are using.
At the same time I have not seen any figure for support, so maybe a local referendum is the best way forward, but as always we find with referendums the outcome is not accepted by the losing side (ie. Union Square Gardens, Aberdeen).
I don’t suppose the small island of Bressay would appreciate 103 turbines and am sure Lerwick would have a few things to say about it, but I would quite happily accept 103 turbines to Northmavine.
It would generate some much needed jobs. Also it wouldn’t cause much damage to our view, Sullom Voe oil terminal and now Total sorted that out a long time ago. I wonder if the supporters of Sustainable Shetland would accept Europe’s biggest oil terminal on their door step.
See no evil, hear no evil but reap the benefit. I would like to point out that I have no problem with the Sullom Voe oil terminal, it’s part and parcel of the view I have been brought up with and it would be a miss if it was to go.
We have all benefited greatly from its existence. But I like to use it to make my point.
