New Aith head Michael Spence

SHETLAND Islands Council has appointed local physics teachers Michael Spence as the new head of Aith junior high school.

Mr Spence comes from a family of head teachers, his father Charlie having run primary schools in Mossbank and Sound, Lerwick, while uncle Andy was at the helm of Baltasound junior high school and uncle Ian ran Lerwick’s Anderson High.

The Unst man will take up his new post at the start of the autumn term on 13 August replacing Barbara Morris, who is retiring.

He began his career in 1995 teaching maths and physics at Scalloway junior high school, before being appointed physics teacher at Brae high school five years later. In 2006 he was promoted to principal teacher of physics at Anderson high school.

Mr Spence said: “I am looking forward to getting to know the pupils, staff, parents and the wider school community to continue to provide an excellent educational experience which helps to equip all the pupils with the flexible skills and positive attitudes to prosper.”

Aith junior high school is one of several schools that will be arguing for its future survival under a refreshed review being undertaken by Shetland Islands Council as it strives to save £3 million on its education budget.
