News / Boy racer keeps his licence
A NOVICE driver who sped into Lerwick at 90mph narrowly escaped being banned from the road at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Shaun Llewellyn, of 125 North Road, Lerwick, admitted breaking the 60mph speed limit down the Black Hill that leads into the north of the town late on 1 March.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the seventeen year old was stopped by police at 11.30pm, but within 24 hours his office had received a “very contrite” letter apologising for his actions.
Mr Mackenzie said: “I think he got a significant fright and shock to the system and I have no doubt he fully understands the foolishness of what he did.”
Defence agent Tommy Allan put in a plea that Llewellyn be allowed to keep his licence, which he would have lost had he received just six penalty points due to his age.
Mr Allan said giving his client just five penalty points would “put him in a place where if he puts a foot or a tyre wrong he will lose his licence”.
Sheriff Philip Mann went one step further and endorsed his licence with four penalty points due to his early plea, saying he was satisfied the “penny had dropped”. He also fined him £300.
