News / Redd up time
DRIVERS in Shetland are being asked to keep their eyes open for volunteers taking part in the UK’s largest open air spring clean that begins this weekend and continues over the next few weeks.
The 25th annual Voar Redd Up will see one fifth of the island’s 22,000 residents join in to clean rubbish from beaches, coastlines and road verges.
Tonnes of “bruck” will be collected by three dedicated environmental improvement teams for safe disposal and recycling.
Organisers Shetland Amenity Trust are keen to receive stories and photos from the schools, nurseries, families, individuals, businesses and community groups taking part.
One group taking part for the first time is local rock climbers Climb Shetland who intend to hold their annual general meeting above the cliffs of Eshaness before camping out and abseiling into Calders Geo and Da Hols o Scraada on Sunday to redd up.
Project officer Sita Hughson said: “With thousands taking part this weekend, we would like to remind drivers to be aware of Redd Up volunteers clearing roadsides during the coming days and ask them to take extra care.”
