News / Pipe warning
SHIPPING in the Shetland oil port of Sullom Voe is on alert for a 200 to 300 metre plastic pipe floating within the harbour limits.
Shetland Islands Council has issued a notice to mariners warning them of the hazard.
The pipe, described as 10 to 12 inches in diameter was discovered within Orka Voe by a local scallop boat on Monday.
It was initially thought to be a salmon cage pipe, but since it was floating near the construction site for the Shetland gas plant, Total was alerted.
A spokeswoman for the company said on Tuesday afternoon that a survey ship had gone to the area and was standing by.
A spokesman for the port of Sullom Voe said there was no danger to tanker traffic and the port was operating normally.
