ANYONE interested in standing in the forthcoming local government elections is invited attend an open day to held in Lerwick Town Hall on Tuesday from 3pm to 8pm.

Nomination packs can be picked up and there will be information available on everything involved in being a councillor.

Staff from Shetland Islands Council will be on hand to answer questions. In addition, some of the SIC’s current councillors have agreed to attend to offer advice on key aspects of the role and updates on the issues of the day.

Shetland’s returning officer Jan Riise said a similar initiative back in 2007 had been very successful.

“I would hope that anyone interested in the election will come along on Tuesday to find out more about the nomination process, and the ultimate rewards of becoming a councillor.”
