Lord of the Flies by Shetland Youth Theatre

SHETLAND Youth Theatre are to perform a stage version of the powerful novel Lord of the Flies about a group of English public schoolboys marooned on a deserted island.

The young theatre company is adding a new slant to the stage adaptation of William Golding’s 1954 novel, which exposes the cruelty and savagery that lies beneath the veneer of a civilised society.

Director John Haswell said the group was faced with a problem, as most of its members are young women, so they decided to introduce female parts.

“This gives a completely new dimension to the piece, if anything making it even more shocking as it questions gender stereotypes,” Mr Haswell said.

“Instead of being purely about class politics, our version now brings sexual politics into the frame and the piece is even stronger as a result.”

Shetland Youth Theatre is well known for performing in unusual outdoor locations such as Scalloway Castle and the redundant Ness of Sound hatchery, however despite this play being set outside, they have opted for the warmth of Lerwick’s Garrison Theatre.

Mr Haswell explained: “A piece of outdoor theatre in the summer can be a chilly experience. A similar event at the end of March would be challenging for everyone concerned.”

Lord of the Flies is performed at 7.30pm from Thursday 29 March to Saturday 31 March. Tickets, priced £8/£6 (concessions) can be bought from Shetland Box Office by calling 01595 745 555 or online at www.shetlandboxoffice.org

The show is recommended as being suitable for upper primary school aged children and above.
