News / Community council by-election

NOMINATIONS are now open for the community council by-election as 16 vacancies in eight community council need to be filled.

They are:

  • 1 vacancy in each of Gulberwick, Nesting, Northmavine and Skerries
  • 2 vacancies in Scalloway
  • 3 vacancies in each of Bressay and Delting; and
  • 4 vacancies in Lerwick.

Nomination papers are available from 4 Market Street in Lerwick and should be returned before 4pm on 31 January. Forms can also be obtained from the relevant community council clerk.

In the event of a contest, voting will take place by a postal ballot at the end of February and the count will take place on 16 March.

A spokesman said: “Community councils are made up of elected volunteers from the community.  Their main purpose is to find out and express the views of the community to the local authority and other public bodies.”
