News / Independence debate
THE NEXT Althing debate is again highly topical with the independence referendum likely to be one of the main political issues of 2012.
The motion being debated on Saturday 14 January is “Shetland’s future lies in an independent Scotland” and two of the islands’ parliamentary representatives will be facing each other across the debating table.
Speaking for the motion will be Nationalist MSP Jean Urquhart, supported by Danus Skene. Putting forward arguments against the notion of independence will be isles MP Alistair Carmichael, supported by Brae High School pupil Ben Raikes.
The Althing debate is in the Tingwall School starting at 7.30pm.
