News / Walls Pier contract to be wound up
SHETLAND Islands Council and Inverness based construction firm Airport Civil Engineering Ltd have agreed to wind up their contract to build the new £2.5 million Walls Pier.
Last month, the local authority announced that work on the new pier had been halted until April next year due to “resourcing difficulties”.
At the time, Martin Anderson of Airport Civil Engineering said the delays were caused by a shortage of skilled labour with the amount of construction work currently going on in Shetland.
On Monday, the SIC announced that following talks with the contractor the contract would now be wound up.
The SIC’s manager for capital projects, Robert Sinclair, said: “We’ve had some useful talks with the contractor over recent weeks and have agreed with them that this is the best way forward.
“The council is now looking forward to getting the job finished. We’re confident of getting another contractor on board in the near future.”
Mr Anderson said: “I’m glad that we’ve been able to resolve matters so quickly and to be able to do so by mutual agreement.”
The local authority is expected to announce in due course who will take over the project.
