News / “A home from home”
THE JANET Courtney hall of residence, home to generations of young Shetlanders staying away from home during their secondary school years, has received a glowing report from the Care Inspectorate.
The inspector Mark Causer said the hostel provided “a supportive and caring environment”, was well maintained with high levels of participation from its residents, making it feel like “a home from home”.
The inspection was carried out on 17 November and the report will be published on the Care Inspectorate’s website on Friday here.
Mr Causer said there had been considerable improvements since the last inspection, with a general upgrade and extra facilities like wi-fi and a flatscreen TV. The programme of improvement will continue with suggestions from residents.
Mr Causer thanked the young people for “their welcome and their open and honest approach to the inspection. It was evident that the hostel was a home from home where they felt cared for and valued”.
SIC director of children’s services Helen Budge said she was delighted with the report, which gave confidence to parents and pupils and provided a tremendous boost for staff.
