News / Craig Campbell “got it”
On a blustery and cold Tuesday night, a busy Garrison Theatre was treated to the lively comedic performance of Canadian stand-up Craig Campbell, writes James Stewart.
Performing in Shetland for the first time and by his own request, Campbell led the audience through two hours of energetic and hilarious stories about the experiences he has had in his life, ranging from the simple act of trying to buy fruit in a foreign country to climbing the largest mountain in North America.
Campbell’s storytelling prowess is often likened to Scottish comedian Billy Connelly, but the energy that he puts into his shows is equally reminiscent of a young Jim Carrey.
Campbell’s animated stage presence really brings his whimsical tales to life, helping the audience to picture the scene through his actions and facial expressions.
He has recently supported Frankie Boyle and will be doing so again on Boyle’s next tour. Having been involved in comedy for over 20 years, Campbell now believes he is as happy as he’s ever been.
Beaming, he explained: “I’m at a stage in my life where I am able to travel around the world to do what I love.”
He also found himself surprised at the turnout – over 160 people had braved the weather to see him.
“I didn’t know what to expect as I figured I would be a bit of an unknown up here. Tonight was a really good crowd for me,” he admitted.
Despite having only arrived in Shetland a few hours before the show, Campbell confidently launched into jokes related to Shetland, bouncing off audience interactions with quick and witty anecdotes. Some truly side-splitting moments ensued and there was a real feeling among the audience that he ‘got it’.
After the show, Campbell was happy to meet a queue of fans in the foyer of the Garrison Theatre for signings and photos.

A rigorous touring schedule meant that Campbell could only be in Shetland overnight before having to journey onwards. He left the isles wishing he had had more time to enjoy them, but promised to try his best to return next year with his comedy ensemble which includes compatriot and Mock The Week regular Stewart Francis.
The prospect of seeing Campbell again is exciting, and given the rapturous applause to which he left the stage, it is clear that he would be welcomed back with open arms.
