A SHETLAND drink driver was disqualified for three years and ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work after admitting being four times over the limit when he appeared before Lerwick Sheriff Court, on Wednesday.
Brendon John Smith, of Glenview, in Dunrossness, was also put under a supervision order for 18 months.
The 34 year old was stopped by police in Scalloway’s Main Street in the afternoon of 28 August after being alerted by concerned villagers.
The court heard that Smith had been drinking since 11am the same morning and was in the process of attempting to drive the 25 miles to his home address.
Sheriff Philip Mann told Smith that this had been a “horrendous account”, and suggested that he must have been so drunk as to almost endanger his life.
He told him that he could have been sent to jail for the offence, but had decided to educate him to the danger of his behaviour.
Smith can reduce the period of disqualification by seven months if he successfully completes a drink driver rehabilitation course.
