News / Gold for Andrea
SHETLAND won its first NatWest Island Games gold medal in the pool on Monday afternoon when 18 year old Andrea Strachan set a new games record in the 50 metres breaststroke.
Her performance was soon followed by team mate Amy Harper winning silver in the 200 metres freestyle.
Shetland’s third medal is a bronze won by Inga Woods in the javelin with a throw of 31.3 metres.
Strachan won Shetland’s first medal of the games in style with a record breaking swim of 32.57 seconds, beating the Island Games record she set in her heat by 0.02 seconds.
Harper herself beat the old Island Games record with her time of 2.03.11, but she was more than a second behind the Guernsey winner Kristina Neves.
