News / Athletes scoop up medals
SHETLAND’S young athletes look strong for the up and coming inter county against Orkney after excelling themselves during last weekend’s Scottish Schools Track and Field Championships.
Seven athletes travelled to Grangemouth and returned with five medals, eight personal bests and one Shetland senior record.
Emma Leask came home with two gold medals for the 400 and 800 metres, achieving the Shetland record of 58.78 seconds in the 400 metres.
Tom Jamieson won a silver in the triple jump, while Haydn Thomason and Sophie May Leyland earned bronze medals in the 200 metres and high jump respectively.
Tom Jamieson’s performance was good enough to put him forward for international selection representing Scotland at schools level.
The other athletes taking part were Megan Smith (200 and 400 metres), Jonathan Adam (1,500 and 3,000 metres) and Holly King (long jump, 100 and 200 metres).
Shetland Athletics Club chairwoman Elaine Park said that every athlete from Shetland returned with either a medal or a personal best from the event.
“It was a fantastic weekend with excellent performances and it stands them in good stead for this weekend’s junior inter county and, for the older ones, the Island Games the following week.”
