Faroe trade visit

FAROESE trade minister Jóhan Dahl will visit Shetland next month following the recent trip by a Shetland delegation to examine our northern neighbour’s  rural broadband network and general economic activity.

Shetland Islands Council’s head of economic development Neil Grant said on Thursday that Mr Dahl was primarily interested in energy issues, wanting to find out about Shetland’s plans for a wind farm and interconnector as well as developments at Sullom Voe where Total are building a £500 million gas plant.

Mr Grant said that Faroe was interested in seeing if they could win any business providing services for the Total building project, after their highly respected civil engineering firm Articon won the contract to dredge Scalloway harbour this summer.

“I think there are quite a few things both islands feel they can benefit from each other and if we can get a couple of links tied down like this dredging contract we can have some charter flights ferrying the guys up and down,” Mr Grant said.

No date has been set for Mr Dahl’s visit, but he is expected towards the end of May.

Big job for Jumbo

DUTCH company Jumbo Offshore have won the contract to transport and install four huge structures to protect the deepest subsea production system ever created in UK waters at Total’s Laggan/Tormore field west of Shetland.

In June the six metre high structures measuring 38m by 21m weigh between 180 and 270 tonnes and will be put in place over the drill holes at a depth of 600m by Jumbo’s dynamically-positioned heavy lift vessel Fairplayer.

The vessel will be taking on temporary accommodation facilities for up to 65 personnel before leaving Rotterdam. Jumbo expect to be able to complete the job in two trips, installing two structures each time using its 900 tonne mast cranes.
