Kristina makes the grade
THE FIRST female for 20 years to be awarded a full modern apprenticeship in engineering maintenance in Shetland is Lerwick lass Kristina Henderson, who was presented with her certificate by her employer Grieg Seafood Hjaltland UK Ltd on Wednesday.
Perhaps not as well known for their engineering work, the salmon producer relies on a skilled engineering workforce to ensure that all their factory equipment is regularly maintained.
The 21 year old said it had not been easy to be accepted on the scheme. She added: “I’m really pleased to have completed the apprenticeship. I love the work and the variety.
“I would definitely recommend an engineering apprenticeship. It was by far the better choice for me than going to university. It meant that I could earn money whilst I gained experience and did my college work.”
Kristina has now been offered a permanent position with the company. Her boss Michael Stark said: “We currently have four apprentice engineers working for us and Kristina has been a real asset to the team, demonstrating a natural aptitude, in particular, for welding.
“We are a locally-based company and are very much committed to offering youngsters and school leavers the opportunity to pursue their chosen career and gain practical skills with local businesses.”

Aberdeen sponsors Lerwick
Aberdeen Harbour Board has become the latest sponsor to back the Tall Ships Race visit to Lerwick this summer.
Announcing a £2,000 sponsorship, the port’s chief executive Colin Parker said: “We are delighted to be involved in sponsorship for the Tall Ships’ visit to Lerwick this year as a Host Port Supporter. Our two ports have a long history of both passenger and freight links that are hugely important to both economies.”
More than 2,000 crew and 10,000 visitors are expected to be in Shetland when the tall ships visit Lerwick harbour between 21 and 24 July. Some 54 ships have already signed up to take part, among them the magnificent Wylde Swan from the Netherlands.
