Fencing success in Glasgow

SHETLAND’S young fencers won two trophies at the Glasgow Open, held at the weekend.

Stephen Rocks, originally from Brae, managed to defeat last year’s Open winner, and medal winning member of the Scottish Commonwealth team, Glenn Sancroft.

Coach Andy Alderman said Stephen’s progress through the completion was seamless as he dominated the field.

Meanwhile, Kyle Smith won his first senior trophy when he won the secondary foil competition on Sunday, where “he totally dominated the final”.

In other results, Christopher Rocks came 8th and Chris Hudson 9th in the men’s epee and 15 year old Mhairi Gifford managed a 9th place in the ladies’ epee.

Althing debating society invites the candidates

THE Scottish parliament election campaign will step up a gear on Saturday, when all five candidates are expected to make an appearance at the Althing debate.

Althing Social Group chairwoman Florence Grains said the candidates would be given 15 minutes each to set out their election manifestos.

Following the traditional tea break, the five candidates will be grilled in a questions and answers sessions in the second half.

Referring to Monday’s quarrel between the BBC and independent candidate Billy Fox, Mrs Grains said: “Nobody will be barred; the candidates are all equal regardless of their status.”

The Althing Society meeting is in the Tingwall hall and starts at 7.30pm.

Excellence award for voluntary services

Voluntary Action Shetland (VAS), based at Market House in Lerwick, has become the first organisation in Shetland to achieve European Framework for Quality Management (EFQM) Award Committed to Excellence.

VAS executive officer Catherine Hughson said: “This is a great achievement for Voluntary Action Shetland, staff and directors.

“EFQM members share a common goal, the pursuit of excellence, and this Quality Management Award puts on record the fact VAS provides this, while delivering quality services locally and nationally.”
