News / Tories choose Cross as candidate
THE SHETLAND Conservative Association has selected an investment manager with farming and aquaculture interests in the isles as their candidate for the May elections for the Scottish Parliament.
Sandy Cross, aged 41, currently divides his time between Edinburgh and Shetland, where he is involved in starting a mussel growing business and farming at Vementry on the west side.
Married with two young children, he has been spending long periods in Shetland since he was a baby – his father previously farmed at Vementry.
He has a degree from the University of Edinburgh and also an MBA from Imperial College in London.
On Wednesday, Mr Cross said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to stand for the Shetland as Conservative and Unionist candidate. I am committed to doing my best to represent the interests of the people of Shetland at all times.
“In particular, I would like to encourage financial responsibility and accountability at all levels of government and to work towards enabling a greater level of participation by citizens in the management of local affairs.
“I believe that the policies of the Conservative and Unionist party offer by far the best way to undo the effects of previous irresponsible government policies.”
Her said he would concentrate on:
- standing up for the interests of local businesses and the rural economy in Edinburgh
- encouraging sustainable economic activity and financial discipline at a local and national level;
- working to reduce transport costs and improve efficiency for both passengers and freight to and from the islands;
- encourage constructive co-operation with Westminster by the Scottish Parliament;
- support efforts for greater openness from government and more grass-roots participation in local decision-making.
Shetland Conservative Association chairman Maurice Mullay commented: “We are extremely fortunate to have a candidate of Sandy’s abilities, energy and background. His impressive financial experience and local understanding are tremendous assets and he is clearly the best representative for Shetland in the Scottish Parliament.”
