News / Drug dealer faces years in jail
A LERWICK man was told that he faced a lengthy prison sentence when he admitted dealing the Class B drug amphetamine between March and the end of August last year.
On Thursday Lerwick Sheriff Court deferred sentence on 47 year old Ebrahim Abdula Hassan, of 65 Gilbertson Road, until 10 February for reports.
Hassan pled guilty to one charge of drug dealing and two charges of possessing smaller amounts of heroin and cannabis resin.
Police raided his home and that of a relative, in North Road, on 25 August and seized amphetamine with a street value of £7,650, more than £3,000 in cash, as well as heroin worth £462, and cannabis resin worth £10.
The court heard how Hassan had started dealing drugs after he became addicted to heroin in early 2010.
Of the 712 grams of amphetamine, seized at the North Road address, Hassan expected to make £5,500 of which he would have been allowed to keep £2,000, with the rest to be sent to an address in Aberdeen, the court heard.
In mitigation, defence agent Gregor Kelly said Hassan had co-operated fully with the police investigation and had made a full admission of his guilt at the earliest possibility.
He called on the sheriff to ask for reports so that the court would have a full picture of his client’s drug dependence before passing sentence.
Sheriff Graeme Napier deferred sentence for four weeks for reports to be prepared but told Hassan: “You have to expect a significant custodial sentence in the region of five years. I am asking for reports to get the full background to assist me in determining the length of a custodial sentence.”
The drugs and £3,250 in cash have been forfeited.
