Police arrest drink driver
SHETLAND police arrested a 21 year old man on Tuesday for driving whilst disqualified and other road traffic offences in the Walls area.
Police are also investigating a break in at a house in the Stanegarth area of Lerwick around midday on Wednesday and ask for any information from the public to help their enquiries.
Flag hand over
SHETLAND Islands Council has received £4,000 from EventScotland to help stage a Commonwealth Games flag handover celebration in Clickimin Leisure Centre next month.
Active schools manager Philipp Ashley-Smith hopes to attract as many as 500 pupils from schools across the isles for the two events on 5 and 6 October.
The local celebrations, a week ahead of the real handover in Delhi, are part of the build up towards the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in four years time.
Mr Ashley Smith said the day in the Clickimin would include a symbolic handover ceremony and introductions to three different Commonwealth Games sports.
Schools that are interested in participating are asked to get in touch with him at the council’s community work department.
Fiddle finalist
SHETLAND fiddler Maggie Adamson has been named as one of eight finalists in the prestigious 2010 Glenfiddich Fiddle Championships.
Held at Blair Castle in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, on 30 and 31 October the competition is by invitation only following earlier competitive successes this year.
The other finalists are Nicola Auchnie, from Turriff, Aberdeenshire; Fiona Henderson, from Kirriemuir, Angus; Shona MacFadyen, from West Kilbride; Graham Mackenzie, from Inverness; Ann Nicol, from Insch, in Aberdeenshire; Gillian Ramsay, from Kirriemuir; and Erin Smith, from Aberdeen.
Newton Faulkner’s coming
ACCLAIMED singer/songwriter Newton Faulkner will play a gig in the Clickimin Centre’s bowls hall on 11 November thanks to a collaboration of Atlantic Edge Music Services and Inverness based company Beyond Promotions.

On its release Faulkner’s double platinum selling 2007 debut album ‘Hand Built by Robots’ went straight to number one in the charts and was hailed as an instant classic.
Davie Gardner, of Atlantic Edge Music Services, said: “It’s fantastic that a name like Newton Faulkner is keen to come to Shetland as part of his highlands and islands tour.”
