News / Young addict fined for thieving
A YOUNG Shetland man was fined £300 at Lerwick Sheriff Court for three minor thefts committed in April and May this year when he appeared from custody on Monday morning.
Sentence on Andrew Steven Cumming, of 4 Kirkidale, Walls had originally been deferred until Wednesday last week to allow time to try and help the 19 year old with his aggressive drug addiction.
When Cumming failed to show up on Wednesday, sentence was initially deferred until the following day. However, when he also failed to appear on Thursday the court issued an arrest warrant.
Police captured Cumming on Sunday and kept him in the cells overnight for Monday’s court proceedings.
Sheriff Daniel Kelly said it was appropriate to deal with the three theft charges now and fined him £100 for each charge.
Cumming had earlier pled guilty to stealing two keys and almost £20 in cash from an address in Lerwick’s Union Street on 4 April, stealing £9 in cash from an address in South Lochside the same day, and stealing some food from the local co-op supermarket on 15 May.
The last charge was committed while on bail from Lerwick Sheriff Court.
