News / Faroe marathon

A LARGE group of Shetland runners are heading to Faroe on Friday to take part in the 8th Atlantic Airways Torshavn Marathon which will be held on Sunday.

Richard Ingrey and Ian Davidge are taking on the full marathon while Heidi Magnussen, Janet Davidge, Andrea Jeromson, Paul Clelland and Karl Simpson will compete in the half marathon.

Fraser Simpson and Alexis Jamieson are among those who are running the shorter distance of 5.5kilometre.

All three races start with a 5km loop in Torshavn.  The half marathon heads out to Sund where competitors turn and head back to town.  Meanwhile, the marathon runners will turn at Kaldbak.

The series of races is extremely popular with over 200 runners from various nationalities taking to the streets.

The Shetland runners are making their way on a direct Atlantic Airways charter flight from Sumburgh.

A spokesman said: “It is hoped that the race can become an annual fixture for runners if enough interest is shown in the future.”
