News / More frenzied than ever
SHETLAND is gearing up for yet another festival of island culture later this summer.
The seventh Fiddle Frenzy between 8 and 15 August will be larger with more workshops and classes than any of the previous festivals.
At the core of Fiddle Frenzy has been a highly successful fiddle school, designed so that students can learn new tunes and techniques while at the same time experiencing island life.
A spokeswoman for organisers Shetland Arts said: “With a large programme of events, Fiddle Frenzy musicians and followers really can tailor the festival experience to suit individual needs.
“The festival has something for everyone, whether you come for the music, art, crafts, creative writing or just to have fun.”
This year’s programme includes:
” fiddle playing workshops where Shetland tunes and styles are taught by some of the best tutors and players;
” guitar accompaniment workshops featuring the unique Shetland style as practised by the late Peerie Willie Johnson;
” creative writing with Jen Hadfield, poet and winner of the TS Elliot Prize 2008;
” textiles and knitting techniques with Jenny Bradley;
” visual art workshops with Blue Sky Studios;
” cultural tours of the islands led by renowned story tellers;
” concerts featuring world class fiddlers and accompanying musicians.
