News / Hall gets new turbine
A NEW wind turbine has been installed at Mid Yell Hall after it secured over £35,000 in funding from Social Investment Scotland.
The turbine will generate income for the hall through feed-in tariff payments and save up to £7,000 a year on electricity bills.
The volunteer-run hall is described as an “integral” part of Mid Yell’s infrastructure and is regularly used by a range of community groups.
Hall committee chairman Richard Gray said: “We are delighted to have our wind turbine in place and are hopeful the overall reduced running costs will mean funds can be used to improve the hall and facilities for its users.
“We are committed to reducing energy costs and becoming more environmentally friendly, having already installed insulation and energy efficient lighting. Installing the turbine is an important step forward for us.”
The 5KW turbine is able to generate energy at low wind speeds and runs continuously in high winds.
Shetland MSP Tavish Scott said: “Community halls are so important to Shetland and Mid Yell epitomises that. I am very pleased that this funding has made the difference for a renewables project to support the hall and its enterprising committee, who all give up their time to support the Mid Yell community. Congratulations to all involved.”
