A PIONEERING care scheme for elderly people on Unst is building a community garden with help from local business, islanders and the Big Lottery Fund.
The Brucehall Tenants Association in Uyeasound has been awarded £10,000 from the lottery’s Awards for All scheme towards the garden, which has been two and a half years in the planning.
Local salmon firm Meridian added almost £4,000 and local fund raising efforts have helped the association reach its target of £16,400 for the work to go ahead.
The garden will have flowers and vegetables growing in raised beds and a seating area accessible on a paved surface to make it easy for disabled people with Zimmer frames and wheelchairs.
Brucehall is Shetland’s only extra care service that provides 24 hour support for nine elderly residents allowing them to live independently in their own home, even if they are suffering from conditions such as extreme dementia.
Senior social care worker Kathleen Johnson thanked all the fund raisers for all the help they given to turn the tenants’ dream into reality.
Other tenants in the Brucehall complex will be able to access the garden as well.
Bressay Sports Club received £3,000 from the Awards for All to purchase aluminium goal posts, corner flags and line marker paint for their new sports pitch, which will officially open on 31 August.
A further £10,000 has been awarded to Gulberwick public hall to help with the cost of upgrading the car park and the hall entrance to make it more accessible.
