News / Cash for youth

SHETLAND’S youth service is celebrating the award of £9,100 from the Big Lottery Fund to support the isles’ two newly elected members of the Scottish Youth Parliament.

The cash will also be used to develop Shetland Youth Voice, a forum designed to allow the isles’ almost 3,000 young people to be involved in local decision making.

Shetland Islands Council youth development worker Martin Summers said some of the funds will be used to help newly elected MSYPs Kaylee Mouat and Catherine Hannah attend meetings of the youth parliament.

“The funding will allow young people to work together locally through Shetland Youth Voice, attending meetings, holding surgeries and participating in countless local events to represent the interests of young people in Shetland,” he said.

“This project will allow the representatives to participate nationally on the same terms as other MSYPs from across Scotland, ensuring that the voice of Shetland’s 2,977 young people is heard.”

A spokesman for the Big Lottery Fund said: “The group will also use their grant to organise a youth conference on Shetland where young people can find out more about the Youth Parliament and how to make a difference in their community.”

The award was announced on Thursday morning as part of an Awards for All funding round that benefited almost 60 groups across Scotland to the tune of over £360,000.
