New Fair Isle head Nicholas Lucas from Canada

TWO teachers are downsizing their class sizes to head primary schools in Shetland this term.

Nicholas Lucas has left his post running a 350 pupil school in Toronto, Canada, to take over the seven pupil primary on remote Fair Isle, where he hopes his specific experience in outdoor education and music will stand him in good stead.

Meanwhile local girl Samantha Wishart, who returned to Shetland at the start of the year to teach at Bressay primary school, will now take the lead role at Cunningsburgh primary.

Wishart spent 14 years in Dundee as hockey development officer and sports project manager before training as a teacher to work in Large schools in the city.

In Cunningsburgh the class size will be considerably smaller, though for Shetland it has a healthy 83 pupils with a further 22 in the nursery.
