News / Children’s artwork on display

AN EXHIBITION featuring artwork from 300 Shetland schoolchildren has opened in the auditorium of Lerwick venue Mareel.

Unexpected Sites features work from pupils aged between 5-14 from Sandwick Junior High School, Aith Junior High School (including Skeld), Fetlar Primary School, Brae High School and Whalsay School.

The project is the third year of a four-year programme supported by charity Children & The Arts, with support coming from Shetland Arts and SIC Creative Links.

The work was coordinated by local artist Amy Gear, who said: “We’ve been inspired by avian flight paths and journeys on foot into nature, this year’s exhibition is an outing into the unknown as we explore unexpected sites and imagined journeys.”

Shetland Arts exhibition manager Jane Matthews added: “All the participating artists, from P1 – S3 have created work for the show inspired by their visit to Dinh Q. Lê’s exhibition The Colony in February, and also by the work of Amanda Welch, whose exhibition Conditions is currently showing at the Bressay Lighthouse.

“Amy has helped them to explore their own surroundings and to look closely features of their own landscape. She has created a spectacular collaborative show from the work that’s been made.”

Unexpected Sites can be found in the Mareel auditorium from 10am to 8pm until 29 May, with entry free.
