News / Look out for floating pineapples
BEACHCOMBERS in Shetland and the Western Isles have been asked to keep their eyes open for bananas and pineapples that might wash up along west-facing coasts over coming weeks.
Overnight from 19 to 20 October the 16,000-tonne cargo ship Lombok Strait lost two containers filled with bananas and pineapples in stormy seas in the mid Atlantic.
Assuming the containers have broken up, trajectory models indicate the fruit could make landfall in about two to three weeks.
Kyle Briggs of the Lowestoft-based Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) said he had also posted a request for help on the Lego Lost at Sea Facebook page.
“The date and location of any reports of landfall would help calibrate the numerical models,” he said.
