News / Beer festival raises £4,000

THE FIRST Shetland Beer Festival has raised almost £4,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Organisers hope that the event, which was held at Lerwick’s Gilbertson Park games hall in August, could become an annual fixture on the isles’ calendar.

The beer festival saw a number of companies such as Thistly Cross, Lerwick Brewery, Shetland Reel and Beervana hold stalls over two nights.

There was also live music on offer as well as family-friendly activities, with the weekend organised by the local Relay For Life committee.

An announcement on whether the beer festival will return is expected soon – as is confirmation of the venue for the 2018 Relay For Life, which is taking place on 26 May.

Local Relay For Life committee chairman Martin Henderson thanked those who made the inaugural beer festival a success.

He said there was a “very high level of responsible drinking” over the weekend, which had initially attracted a smattering of criticism for linking the sale of alcohol with Cancer Research fundraising.

“Everybody seemed to really enjoy it, and the overwhelming majority of the feedback we’ve received to date has been very positive indeed,” Henderson said.

“As the organising committee – working closely with the suppliers themselves – we all learned a lot, including how to do some things differently and hopefully even better in future should the festival happen again.”
