News / Climbing wall for Aith?

SHETLAND’s indoor climbing scene could be brought back from the brink if plans to reinstall the isles’ only artificial wall in Aith come to fruition.

Last year the climbing wall at the Clickimin Leisure Complex in Lerwick was removed due to changes within the centre, leaving local club Climb Shetland without an indoor facility.

However, seven members of the group are currently working towards achieving a climbing wall award, which would allow them to hold training sessions for people of all ages.

It is hoped that the indoor wall can be modified and reinstalled at the Aith Leisure Centre later this year.

The team have been training with the Orkney Climbing Club and shadowing its members at its Pickaquoy wall to gain more experience, while they have also held sessions with staff at a climbing facility in Kinlochleven.

Climb Shetland member Robina Barton said she hopes a new generation of climbers will benefit if the wall is installed in Aith.

She added that the activity has numerous benefits, from boosting fitness to relieving stress.

“Climbing is a wonderful sport because it uses every part of your body, and your mind,” Barton said.

“It’s also a sport that people of different ages, abilities and skill levels can enjoy together, so it’s really inclusive and makes you feel good about yourself. It’s a great activity for children because they can discover a lot about themselves and what they are capable of.

“For adults I’d say it’s a great way to relieve stress because when you’re focused on what your next move will be you can’t be worrying about anything else.”
