A MAN from Dunrossness has been remanded in custody after appearing in private at Lerwick Sheriff Court over allegations of shoplifting, assault, robbery and resisting arrest.

George Anthony Hogg, 33, appeared from custody on a petition alleging attempted shoplifting, theft by shoplifting, assault and robbery, resisting arrest and contravention of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act.

He made no plea or declaration, was committed for further examination and kept behind bars. Hogg is expected to reappear in court next week.

Meanwhile, a 40 year old man who denies behaving in a threatening or abusive manner and possessing a metal pole will also spend the festive period behind bars after being denied bail.

Jamie Neill, of 191 Sandveien, denied behaving aggressively and challenging the householder at another Sandveien address to a fight on Saturday.

He also pleaded not guilty to possessing the offensive weapon at the housing scheme that day.

Bail was refused by sheriff Arnold Duncan and the case was continued to a trial diet on 21 January, with an intermediate diet via video link to take place on 6 January.

Three further cases called at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Monday.

Thirty one year old Paul Mouat, of 64 Nederdale, Lerwick, is charged with behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by smashing an external window and a number of bottles of wine at his former partner’s house.

The case was continued without plea until 6 January and he was granted bail on the condition that he does not attend an address at Lerwick’s  Bakland or approach the complainer.

Mitchell Cross, 23, of 34C Ladies Drive, Lerwick, pleaded not guilty to a charge of possessing a knife at the Viking Bus Station on Saturday. He was granted bail with a trial date set for 17 March.

Thirty eight year old Richard Johnson, of 4 Grindwell Road, Brae, is charged with possessing a knife at Lerwick’s St Magnus Street on Sunday.

He is also charged with using a vehicle without a valid insurance policy or driving licence. His case was continued without plea until 6 January.
