ONE OF Scotland’s most popular alternative/folk acts, Admiral Fallow, are returning to Shetland for a brace of shows to kick off their new album tour this summer.
The group will play full band shows in the Mid Yell Hall on Friday 29 May, followed by a show at Mareel on Saturday 30 May, in support of their third LP ‘Tiny Rewards’.
Admiral Fallow previously performed acclaimed shows at the 2012 Shetland Folk Festival, including a headline date at Clickimin. These gigs are being organised by local promoters Ragged Wood.
Frontman Louis Abbott says the band members are relishing the prospect of coming back to the islands.
“We’re truly excited to be returning to Shetland to play two special shows,” he says. “Having been up for the folk festival in 2012 we know the Shetland people to be a very warm, attentive and hospitable bunch who love live music.
“We’ve only played in Lerwick before so it’ll be great to get up to Yell and see a bit more of the place. These will be the very first shows of a UK tour and I can’t think of a more lovely part of the world to play songs from our new album ‘Tiny Rewards’ for the first time.”
The band’s diverse influences encompass Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, Elbow, Midlake and King Creosote.
In addition to releasing two acclaimed albums – debut ‘Boots Met My Face’ in 2010 and 2012’s ‘Tree Bursts in Snow’ – Admiral Fallow have performed at many of the UK’s biggest festivals including Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk Festival and T in the Park.
The Glasgow-based quintet consist up of singer and guitarist Abbott, multi-instrumentalist Kevin Brolly, drummer Phil Hague, singer, pianist and flautist Sarah Hayes and bassist Joe Rattray, and all five will perform in Shetland along with touring guitarist Stu Goodall.
‘Tiny Rewards’, which will be officially released four days before the Shetland dates, is described as “heartbreakingly beautiful, sonically audacious and lyrically bewitching” piece of work, its dozen songs derived from “an 18-month experiment to do something different”.
On new single ‘Evangeline’, Abbott ponders what it would be like to become a parent – “to someday be in charge of a small person of your own and the energy and craziness that brings into your life. It’s inspired by some of our friends having kids. You think, shite, that might happen to me at some point.
- Tickets for both shows are on sale now via Shetland Box Office. Mid Yell tickets are priced £12 (£10 for concessions) and Mareel tickets cost £15 (£12 concessions). Both concerts will be a mixture of standing and unreserved seating, but balcony seats at Mareel can be reserved in advance.
