News / Poet Lise Sinclair dies

Lise Sinclair at the Shetland book festival Wordplay in 2011.

THE SMALL community of Fair Isle is in deep shock after one of their best-known residents died from a brain tumor, aged 42.

Poet Lise Sinclair was one of Shetland’s most prolific dialect singer/song-writers and enjoyed an ever growing popularity as an original voice from the northern isles.

The mother of four died overnight from Saturday to Sunday in hospital in Glasgow with her husband at her bedside.

She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer only in May this year and underwent surgery in June.

Expressing his deepest sympathy to the family, southend councillor Allison – Flea – Duncan said her death was a huge loss.

“She was treasure to Shetland and Fair Isle and will be surely missed by everybody.

“ But for what she has done over the years she leaves lovely memories behind.”

She is survived by her husband Ian, and her children Tom, Hannah, Alice and Lowrie.

The funeral will be held in Fair Isle on Friday.

A full tribute of Lise Sinclair’s life and work follows at the weekend.
