News / Fundraising support ‘means the world’

TWO parents have expressed their gratitude to Shetlanders who have stumped up over £3,000 for the family as their five-year-old daughter gets set to undergo 18 months of chemotherapy.

Jennifer Murray and Robert Hannah’s brave daughter Etta was diagnosed with a brain tumour in July, which had spread down her spine.

She has undergone major surgery in Edinburgh, and is set to start 18 months of chemotherapy next week as the family travel between Shetland and Aberdeen.

Friend Jenny Teale decided to launch an online fundraiser to support them as they go through the tough time.

Despite having an initial target of £1,000, over £3,000 has been raised in just five days.

Both parents are self-employed and are set to spend the next three months in Aberdeen, having already stopped their work in July to focus on Etta and her two-year-old sister.

Jennifer said the support from the local community “means the world”.

“I’m overwhelmed with the generosity of the community – all I can say is thank you so much,” she said.

Robert, meanwhile, said that rallying around in times of need is something that the Shetland community excels in.

Jenny, who is the founder of children’s group Bambeenies, wrote on her fundraiser page that she first met Etta when she was a few months old, with the five-year-old then taking part in her dance group Inferno.

She said the treatment and travelling is a “very large strain to bear on Etta’s parents, so, after all the support they have given me, I’d like to ask you all if you can help me support them.”
