News / Relay for Life organisers hail ‘amazing’ total

SATURDAY night’s Relay for Life was a massive success, with the 12-hour marathon bringing in £126,622.75 for Cancer Research UK.

Relay for Life committee chairman Martin Henderson said that this was £30,000 more than the last relay in 2016, and that the organisers were “absolutely delighted” with the result.

“It’s pretty amazing,” he told Shetland News. “Absolutely blown away. It makes it all worthwhile.”

Henderson noted that fundraising is still ongoing until July, so this year’s figure will not actually be finalised until the second week of August.

However, this means that since 2006, Shetland has raised over £1,264,000 for Cancer Research UK.

This year’s event saw 1,400 people walk the Clickimin racetrack from 8pm on Saturday to 8am on Sunday. Live music and food and drink were available beside the track to the participants, many of whom camped in tents on the rugby field, or in caravans by the Anderson High School.

Speaking at the event, Henderson said that Shetland is renowned across the UK for being one of the Relay for Life’s biggest fundraisers:

“It certainly is. We go to Relay [for Life] events… that’s held down on the UK mainland – they’re just in awe of Shetland, really, because it’s done so well and thrived so much, and we hae such a peerie population of folk.”
